The threat landscape reveals that hackers, lured by profit, continue to increase their investments as access to banking services via a mobile application becomes more widespread. Zimperium, the leading mobile security platform for devices and applications, has released its annual Mobile Banking Heists report, which highlights the evolution and progression of banking Trojans around the world. This study reveals in particular that 29 malware families targeted 1,800 banking applications in 61 countries last year. In comparison, the 2022 report found 10 malware families targeting 600 banking applications.

Banking Trojans continue to evolve and advance due to their ability to persevere, bypass security features, and evade detection on mobile devices. As threat actors continue to increase their investments in this area, traditional security practices are unable to keep pace.

The study also reveals that banking institutions in the United States remain, by far, the most targeted by threat actors motivated by greed. No less than 109 American banks were targeted by banking malware in 2023, ahead of the United Kingdom (48 banking establishments) and Italy (44). The study also highlights that Trojan horses no longer only attack banking applications, but also target cybercurrency, social networks and instant messaging.

These findings demonstrate a dynamic and growing mobile threat landscape that requires a highly comprehensive, self-contained, mobile-first security strategy to wage a relentless battle once morest mobile banking Trojans. Rather than reacting to threats, companies must anticipate them by focusing on real-time visibility and protection, and move away from a standardized approach in favor of an approach that takes into account real threats.

With growing fraud losses, soaring operating costs and increased customer distrust combined with the impact on brand, it is clear that banking malware is evolving to make fraud linked to banking services mobile even more ubiquitous. A proactive and adaptive security posture is now essential. The industry-leading mobile application protection suite from Zimperium provides banking institutions with comprehensive device attestation, runtime visibility, and advanced application protection and shielding.
