The aisles of stores have regained the crowds of the boom years as Christmas approaches. But make no mistake: the French have not fallen into a frenzy of consumption. They had in fact started their Christmas shopping very early, at the end of November, to benefit from Black Friday promotions.
They only returned to the stores to finish their gifts and buy something to prepare their festive meals at the last minute, giving shopkeepers a cold sweat. “We were expecting late shopping as the holidays started very late this year, explains Nicolas Neykov, general manager of Ferrero in France and president of the chocolate union. So people were only immersed in the festive atmosphere at the last moment.”
