Arterial Hypertension Days: Key Sessions, Lifestyle Interventions, and Therapeutic Compliance

2024-01-03 14:57:06

As part of the partnership between Medscape and the Club of Young Hypertensiologists (CjH), Dr Romain Boulestreau (cardiologist, Bordeaux University Hospital) presents a selection of key sessions from the last Arterial Hypertension Days.

Lifestyle interventions (recommended changes by the International Hypertension Society)

  • an update on which interventions should be encouraged (e.g. consumption of dietary fiber, improved sleep habits, increased exercise and adoption of mindfulness strategies ― music, yoga etc.), and which should be avoided (consumption of tobacco and alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, consumption of refined sugars and salt, exposure to pollution). See graph

Technical news

  • focus on malignant hypertension (and in particular the need to perform a brain MRI) and the first results of the French HAMA cohort

  • What regarding the hypertensiologists of the future? Artificial intelligence is already proving very useful in the management of hypertension, in particular it can make it possible to predict the probability of secondary hypertension. As to multiomicsit would make it possible to better assess cardiovascular risks, and even, in a few years, to recommend the optimal treatment for each patient.

Therapeutic compliance

  • “No other treatment is necessary to treat hypertension.” Indeed, with the current strategy of quadruple therapy in 2 tablets combining traditional medications, hypertension can be controlled in 90-95% of patients. The two major problems that must be fought once morest are therapeutic inertia (by doctors) and lack of therapeutic compliance (by the patient).

  • How to convince “patients with medication difficulties” (we will henceforth avoid using the term “non-compliant”) by proceeding in stages

  • Reminder of the benefit of reducing the intake (you should almost never exceed 2 tablets)

  • For some patients, renal denervation has a role to play
