As the copyright for the early version of Walt Disney’s animated character Mickey Mouse expired, the first horror film using this character was released.
According to IMDB, an American movie data site, on the 2nd (local time), the trailer for the horror film ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap’ featuring the Mickey Mouse character was released the day before.
In this movie, on her 21st birthday, her friends prepare a surprise party for the main character, Alex, who works late at night at an amusement park arcade, but a killer wearing a Mickey Mouse mask appears and plays a game once morest them. In the trailer video, several scenes from the silent animation ‘Steamboat Willie’ (1928), in which Mickey Mouse first appeared, are inserted, and the mask worn by the killer appears in a grotesquely twisted shape, unlike Mickey Mouse’s original face.
“Steamboat Willie’s is a ridiculous story regarding Mickey Mouse killing people,” the film’s production team said in a press release. “We just wanted to have fun with it.”
British actor Simon Phillips, who wrote and produced the film and played the man behind the Mickey Mouse mask, said in an interview with the BBC that “putting Mickey in a family film doesn’t break new ground,” he said. “You have to come up with something completely opposite,” he said.
The production team has not yet confirmed the release date, but expected it to be released in March. The reason such a movie was able to come out is because Disney’s copyright on ‘Steamboat Willie’ expired on January 1 of this year, allowing anyone to freely share, reuse, and adapt this work.
Accordingly, not only this horror film featuring Mickey Mouse, but also the horror video game ‘Infestation 88’, which stated that it was inspired by ‘Steamboat Willie’, was released the day before.
Foreign media pointed out that the Mickey Mouse characters produced following the early work ‘Steamboat Willie’ are still copyrighted by Disney, so misuse of these characters might result in lawsuits. “We will continue to protect our rights to more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other copyrighted works, and we will continue to protect our rights to Mickey and other iconic characters,” Disney said in a statement ahead of the expiration of its copyright on “Steamboat Willie.” “We will make efforts to prevent consumer confusion due to unauthorized use.”
