Explosive Attack on Military Unit in Antioquia: Soldier Killed, 12 Injured – Latest Updates and News

An attack with explosives once morest a military unit of the Seventeenth Brigade that was moving in the village of Los Enamorados de Turbo left one soldier dead and another 12 uniformed soldiers injured in the early hours of this Wednesday, January 3, in Urabá, Antioquia, according to reports the National Army.

The criminal action, the authorities pointed out, would have been perpetuated by members of the Juan de Dios Úsuga substructure of the ‘Gulf clan’ that operates in the subregion, when the troops were carrying out stability operations to guarantee the security of the community.

Professional soldier Luis Orlando Caballero was killed in the explosive attack, while two non-commissioned officers and 10 soldiers were injured. Combat nurses provided first aid to the wounded soldiers, who are being evacuated to hospital centers in Urabá.

The Seventeenth Brigade reported that other military units were immediately transferred to the area to support the public order situation. As they explained, in the early hours of this Wednesday troops carried out military operations to establish the whereregardings of those allegedly responsible for the crime.

“The National Army deeply regrets the loss of soldier Caballero, who offered his life in the line of duty, and expresses its deepest condolences to his family and friends,” they stated in a press release.

An interdisciplinary team was arranged by the National Army to accompany the family of the deceased soldier. They also indicated that they will monitor the injured personnel hoping for their speedy recovery.

“The Institution rejects this terrorist action that violates human rights and flagrantly transgresses the provisions of International Humanitarian Law, making use of non-conventional methods of war indiscriminately, an event for which, through the Seventeenth Brigade, they will interpose the respective complaints before the competent authorities,” the Army stated.
