If the number of billionaires on the continent has remained the same as at the end of 2022, their wealth has fallen sharply, according to Forbes. Here are the fortunes of the ten richest men in Africa at the end of 2023.
After twelve consecutive years at the head of the richest men in Africa, Aliko Dangote is dethroned by a South African. According to Forbes data at the end of 2023, the continent has only 20 billionaires out of 2,584 globally, representing less than 0.8% of the world’s billionaires. This ranking only takes into account billionaires whose assets are mainly in Africa. The South African Elon Musk, the richest man in the world with a fortune estimated by Forbes at $229 billion at the end of 2023, the Ethiopian Mohammed Al Amoudi, the Somali Mo Ibrahim… are not taken into account in this ranking.
If the number of billionaires on the continent remained the same as in 2022, following the reintegration of the Eswatinian Nathan Kirsh, we note a drop under the effect of a combination of factors: impact of covid-19, effects of the Russia-Ukraine crisis and the removal of the only African female billionaire from the ranking, Isabel dos Santos. Thus, Aliko Dangote, the Nigerian billionaire who reigned for twelve years at the head of the richest men in Africa, lost his crown in 2023.
The tycoon of cement, sugar, but also fertilizers and soon oil refining with the start-up of his new petroleum products refinery, the largest in Africa, has suffered greatly from the depreciation of the naira. Aliko Dangote, according to Forbes, is now ahead of South African John Rupert & family with a fortune estimated at $10.70 billion. By country, South Africa and Egypt are the most represented in the table of the greatest number of billionaires with six and five representatives respectively. Behind follow Nigeria (3 billionaires), Morocco (2), Algeria (1), Eswatini (1), Tanzania (1) and Zimbabwe (1). African billionaires come from only eight countries.
