The admission of guilt occurred this Tuesday during a hearing scheduled by the Federal Court of the Southern District of New York. In it, Córdoba would have acknowledged that he participated in the shipment of cocaine to New York City in the United States.
Now, the official’s brother will have to wait to be given the years of sentence that he will have to serve in North American prisons. The amount of the sentence is expected to be known next April.
Córdoba Ruiz had been captured on February 3, 2022 in Medellín, due to the file he had before the federal court of the Southern District of New York.
He is accused of trafficking cocaine across the Pacific in complicity with Gentil Duarte’s dissidents. In January 2023, President Gustavo Petro signed the resolution that authorized his extradition.
In March of last year, the North American justice system rejected continuing the investigation that linked Córdoba to firearms trafficking. However, he decided to continue the accusation due to the links – of the now confessed criminal – with drug trafficking.
The indictment once morest Córdoba indicates that he was presented to an undercover DEA agent – who posed as a Mexican drug trafficker – as the link that would help him contact a cocaine producer who had the capacity to produce 8,000 kilos every four months.
The alleged producer, the investigation determined, was the dejected dissident alias Gentil Duarte. Subsequently, Córdoba received $15,000 from the undercover agent as part of his “profits” from selling five kilos of cocaine in the United States.
