Hervé Hasquin was the guest of Bel RTL this Tuesday morning at 7:50 a.m. The former minister-president of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation answered Martin Buxant’s questions, particularly concerning the future of our kingdom.

Hervé Hasquin, you who are a historian, does Belgium have a long-term future?

“Yes, Belgium still has a future, but it will still transform. We are a country of 11,700,000 inhabitants and we are not always aware when we are French-speaking and Walloon in particular that there are 3 million Flemings more than Walloons. There are 6,700,000 Flemish, 3,700,000 Walloons and 1,200,000 Brussels residents. And within the Brussels population, you have around 160 nationalities represented.”

Do you mean that it is normal for them to dominate the structures of the Belgian state?

“No, but they dominate them in a certain way. There is a balance of power. They have obvious economic prosperity while all the witnesses are blinking for Brussels, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and for Wallonia. It’s on the verge of bankruptcy. Consequently, it will undoubtedly be necessary to call for help and whatever the leaders of French-speaking parties say today, it will undoubtedly be necessary to go through some of the Flemish conditions to improve the financing of French-speaking entities which will undoubtedly have to restructure.”
