A thousand civil servants and other revelers started the new year together on Tuesday at Ancienne Belgique, as is tradition. “I’ll probably wake up with a hangover,” some have already predicted for the next morning.
The 53rd edition of the Civil Servants’ Ball opened its doors at 1:00 p.m. It will end at 10:00 p.m. “Everything is going very well at the moment,” rejoiced organizer Patrick Vanhopplinus, around 4 p.m. “I think it’s going to play out like last year.”
Participants’ expectations are high. In addition to having fun, some hope to meet people. “This ball is the ideal place to get to know your colleagues better,” noted Grégory from the Crisis Center. “Everyone here is very friendly, regardless of department or management.”
The Civil Servants’ Ball takes place every first working day of the new year. This holiday was originally intended to support the families of the victims of a fire that occurred at the Ministry of Education and Culture at the time. Contrary to what its name suggests, everyone is welcome, even those who are not civil servants. People from the private sector, banking sector, police or firefighters also participate, depending on the organization.
