As a result of the earthquake that occurred in Japan, a tsunami also occurred in the east coast area.

Although it has now subsided, the Meteorological Agency is urging caution for the time being as followingshocks continue in Japan.

Reporter Yang So-yeon will tell you how likely it is that this tsunami will occur once more in the future, which occurred for the first time in 31 years, and how great the risk will be if it does.

A strong earthquake occurred in Japan at 4:10 pm yesterday.

Less than two hours later, at 6:01 p.m., the tsunami reached Namhangjin, Gangneung.

It was 30 minutes earlier than the Korea Meteorological Administration predicted.

Tsunami waves began to surge in other areas of the east coast.

The highest height is 85cm in Mukho Port, Donghae City.

The tsunami, which gradually subsided following that, gradually stabilized as it decreased to less than 10 cm around 8 a.m. today.

No damage occurred this time, but I can’t relax.

This is because earthquakes and tsunamis have occurred on the East Coast in the past, including in 1993.

In particular, in 1983, a tsunami exceeding 2 meters occurred at Mukho Port in the East Sea, causing three people to die or go missing.

The western part of Japan’s Akita Prefecture, where the 1983 earthquake occurred, is the border area between the Eurasian plate and the Okhotsk plate.

The northern part of Japan’s Noto Peninsula, where this earthquake occurred, is also located along this border.

A similar process might cause a tsunami along the East Coast in the future.

″There are records of multiple earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 7.0. If an earthquake occurs in the same area and a tsunami comes to our country, the height might be up to 6 meters.”

A tsunami warning is issued when the tsunami height exceeds 50cm, and a warning is issued when the tsunami height exceeds 1m.

Although tsunami waves may be lower in height than typhoon waves or huge waves, they are no less powerful.

The speed of tsunami propagation is faster the deeper the sea.

On the east coast, where the water depth is 2km, the tsunami propagation speed is regarding 500km per hour.

The earthquake shock causes a huge amount of water to shake, and the resulting ‘water mass’ hits the coast at an incredible speed of 500 km per hour.

In addition, sea water continues to surge according to the tsunami wave cycle of 5 to 10 minutes.

″It is a phenomenon where the entire water is lifted from the sea floor to the sea surface, then falls, and spreads, so you have to think of the entire sea water as being washed up on the shore. Even if it is 20 to 30 cm tall, its power is enormous.”

However, experts point out that our tsunami disaster prevention is still at a rudimentary level compared to typhoons and floods.
