Top European Destinations for 2024 Travel Plans: CNN Travel Selection

The year 2023 was that of the recovery of tourism. In Europe, popular destinations have suffered greatly from overtourism, leading many travelers to seek out lesser-known places for their getaways in 2024.

After an extremely busy year, where many popular destinations have tightened their rules once morest overtourism, it may be time to look to places that are making it easier for tourists to visit and working to encourage sustainable tourism.

With this in mind, the media CNN Travel selected, Monday January 1, more than twenty destinations around the world to take into account for travel plans in 2024. Here are the six European destinations which appear in the selection.

Turkish Black Sea coast, Türkiye

Less known than Turkey’s famous resorts, the Black Sea region, also known as Karadeniz, offers a very different side of the country. The climate in this region is cooler and wetter, producing lush green landscapes.

In summer, it’s a refreshing escape from Turkey’s other sweltering regions. The region of Black Sea has historic towns and villages, as well as beaches and plenty of activities for thrill-seekers.

Tartu, Estonia

Located in southern Estonia, Tartu has been designated the European Capital of Culture for 2024. It is renowned for being the intellectual center of Estonia, home to its oldest university as well as the must-see Estonian National Museum.

The old town is the ideal place for a quiet visit, especially north of the city center, on the banks of the river Mother river. Additionally, Supilinn, nicknamed the city of soup, is also worth a visit.

Trans Dinarica Cycle Route, Balkans

Stretching over exactly 3,364 km, this cycle route connects eight countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and finally Serbia.

Launched in 2024, the Trans Dinarica cycle path will be the first and only cycle path to connect the eight countries of the Balkans Westerners. This 100-step trail is designed for cyclists of all levels.

Albania

Located on the Adriatic coast, between Greece and Montenegro, Albania is one of the destinations expected to rise to the forefront in 2024. In 2023, a record number of Italians crossed the Adriatic for vacations. been at knockdown prices.

Albania is not just regarding its coast. THE pays indeed has a rich culture, notably Christian and Muslim, with historic centers in towns like Berat and Gjirokastër. The country also has breathtaking mountain landscapes.

Macedonia, Greece

Located in the north of the Greece, the region of Macedonia is relatively spared from excessive tourism. Yet it has everything that delights visitors as elsewhere in Greece: archaeological sites, towns rich in history and beaches galore.

Thessaloniki, the region’s capital and Greece’s second city, is a gastronomic center and a mix of architectural and archaeological eras.

Galicia, Spain

Galicia, located northwest of Spain, is a green region with its Atlantic coastline. Visitors will discover magnificent beaches bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and framed by the rugged landscape of Islas Atlánticas National Park.

Visitors flock to its regional capital, Santiago de Compostela, particularly for its impressive 12th-century cathedral, the arrival point for hundreds of thousands of walkers who undertake the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage each year.
