The All-Japan Business Group Ekiden (New Year’s Ekiden) was held on the 1st over a 7-section, 100-kilometer course starting and ending at Gunma Prefectural Office, with 41 teams participating. Hiramatsu Hospital (Ogi City), participating for the fifth time in three years, placed 24th in 4 hours, 57 minutes and 39 seconds, improving on their previous highest ranking of 31st place. Toyota Motor Corporation (Aichi) took the top spot for the first time in eight years with a time of 4 hours, 49 minutes and 2 seconds.
Hiramatsu Hospital moved up to 14th place with Tochigiwatari in the 2nd ward running fast, passing 14 people. Next, Hiroya Ogikubo of Ward 3 ran 7th in the section, pushing his ranking up to 11th. After the 5th ward, the ranking dropped to the 20th place, but each athlete showed perseverance and finally finished in 24th place.
