Post-New Year’s Eve can be a challenge when the alcohol has been flowing freely during the evening. This is the case for any drunken evening outside of New Year’s Eve. To prevent a hangover next time, David Jeanmotte gave us his advice in the special New Year’s show on 8/9.

While moderation remains the most effective means, there are other useful remedies to practice before consuming alcohol:

  • Prepare the stomach : a small spoonful of olive oil before starting the evening will help to line the stomach and slow down the diffusion of alcohol into the blood.
  • Eat fatty and protein-rich foods : nuts, olives or other salty foods will prevent alcohol from eliminating mineral salts from the body.
  • Preventive hydration : Drinking plenty of water before the evening will be essential to prevent dehydration caused by alcohol.
  • More generally, good physical condition is a plus : regular physical training in everyday life improves metabolism and helps eliminate alcohol more quickly.

After the evening or the next day, it might be helpful to follow these tips:

  • Drink to rehydrate and recover : tea, freshly squeezed fruit juices to rehydrate, soups and broths to recover more quickly, coffee to fight headaches, or lemon balm or linden herbal tea to soothe the stomach.
  • Take a mineral-rich breakfast : we can include elements such as pickles, wholemeal bread, eggs or fresh fruits to restore the balance of the body.
  • Favor a calm environment to soothe the body that has been stressed during the evening. For example by putting a mask over your eyes, playing light music or not at all, or earplugs. The body will recover faster.
  • Force yourself to move: light physical exercise like a quiet walk will be ideal for stimulating circulation and regenerating body and mind.
  • Chew parsley or mint : it freshens the breath, relieves headaches and nausea.
