Best Time to Start a Gym Membership: Why January Resolutions Might Not Stick

To all those who start 2024 with a new resolution to buy a new membership and return to the gym to eliminate the excess of the holiday season, would only be a waste of time and money, according to experts.

According to a 2020 study by the DailyMail, nearly 1,700 people are making a new resolution to return to a gym, starting January 1, to eliminate holiday food. This group of people would be much less likely to stick to a regular fitness regime, compared to those who begin training in the summer or fall.

Those who purchase a gym membership, starting in January, would be likely to train regarding three times a month, unlike those in summer or fall, who would train almost five times a month.

Signing up for warm seasons would push people to hit the gym more often and keep the habit, since the motivation doesn’t come from a New Year’s resolution.

“There is a strong message at the beginning of January, with the ‘new me’ and the ‘new start,’ which pushes people to buy a gym membership,” notes study researcher Dr. Matthew Rand of the University of Sheffield.

“But this motivation, which comes from social pressure and a need to start fresh, is not as strong as the motivation when you enroll at another time of the year. Quite simply because you have decided individually to take care of yourself, without relying on resolutions,” he continues, in an interview with the DailyMail.
