Dhaka – The Bangladesh court has sentenced Nobel laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus to prison in connection with labor law violations. Along with Yunus, three colleagues of Grameen Telecom were sentenced. He was sentenced to six months in jail for failing to implement a welfare fund for the company’s workers. Judge Khurshid Alam Khan said that labor laws were found to have been violated. The judge also informed that the four persons will be granted bail.
Meanwhile, Yunus’ supporters have accused the case of being politically motivated. 83-year-old Yunus is a businessman, economist and prominent leader of Bangladesh. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2006 for establishing Grameen Bank in connection with micro-finance.
