Are you tired of those inaudible phone conversations, with mediocre, muffled and noisy sound? However, simply activate a free option included in your package to enjoy high sound quality…
Do you want to make 21st century phone calls with your smartphone? For several years now, telecom operators have been offering an option allowing you to enjoy High Definition quality sound for your conversations. Goodbye parasites and other frills which disrupt the good understanding of the interlocutors. To do this, they rely on two well-established techniques: VoLTE and VoWifi. Behind these acronyms lie two channels through which voice travels.
The first, VoLTE (for Voice over the LTE network) is none other than the 4G network deployed by operators. Mobile phone calls therefore do not use the classic 2G or 3G network. The second, VoWifi, applies the same principle but, this time, the calls go through the Wifi network to which the mobile is connected, at home or in a hotel or restaurant for example. In both cases, voice is transformed on the fly into data packets in order to travel via the Internet.
Both VoLTE and VoWifi only have advantages. First, the audio quality of calls is much higher than those made over the standard network. The sound is clear and without interruption or interference, whether you use the speaker and microphone of the smartphone or a wired or wireless headset. Then, making a VoLTE or VoWIfi call does not lose the Internet connection during the conversation unlike traditional calls. You can therefore search for information on the Web with your smartphone while remaining in communication with your correspondent. Practical.
The good news is that it is not necessary to subscribe to a paid option to benefit from VoLTE and VoWifi. If your mobile plan includes a data envelope for the Internet connection, there is every chance that you will be able to benefit from HD telephone calls at no additional cost. Simply check that the option is active with your operator from your personal space. This is the case by default at Orange, Bouygues Telecom, SFR. With Free, you must send a special code to activate it on your line. And with MVNOs (virtual operators like Auchan Telecom, NRJ Mobile, La Poste Mobile, Prixtel, Réglo Mobile, etc.), you often have to call customer service to benefit from it, when they offer it.
Note in passing that calls made via VoLTE or VoWifi do not eat into your mobile data plan. They are counted as classic calls. Then, you must also use a compatible smartphone and benefit from 4G or WiFi coverage. The vast majority of current mobiles are. Finally, it is necessary to check on the mobile that the option is activated in the settings (read our practical sheet). And to ensure that calls go through VoLTE, nothing might be simpler. Turn off the WiFi on your mobile and make a call. If the 4G or LTE icon remains displayed, it’s good.
To take full advantage of high definition voice during a call, your correspondent must also have VoLTE or VoWifi. Otherwise, the sound automatically adjusts to the lowest quality. Furthermore, if you lose connection to the 4G network during the conversation, the call will not be interrupted. The mobile will automatically switch, without interruption, to the 2G or 3G network, returning to normal quality. And the difference in quality will immediately jump out at you!
