California: California will offer free health care to undocumented immigrants starting in the New Year. The benefit is available to those who are eligible under the state health insurance program.
Despite an expected $68 billion deficit next fiscal year, California’s Medi-Cal health insurance program is making more available to low-income people. In 2015, undocumented children were allowed. Governor Gavin Newsom has faced criticism for using tax money this way.
California will become the first state to offer free health care to undocumented immigrants on January 1, 2024. The existing age norms are also no longer applicable.
Now the benefit is available to those who are between 19 to 25 and above 50. Under a deal Newsom reached with the state Legislature in May, 700,000 undocumented people will also benefit when it becomes available Monday to those ages 26-49.
“What we’re giving away when we provide health care is the ability to live without pain,” said Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (Democrat-Los Angeles). “It’s a historic investment.”
