New York : A former acting New Bedford fire chief was shot and killed by a police officer Friday evening following a fight at a Fairhaven bar.
Paul Coder, 55, of Dartmouth, was shot outside the Bayside Lounge in Fairhaven around 5 p.m. during a standoff with police, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Qin III said
A preliminary investigation revealed that Coder had been drinking with friends for several hours before getting into a fight at the bar. He then went and tried to get into the vehicle when another person tried to stop him from driving.
When police arrived at the scene, Coderre says he was threatened with a gun.
Quinn said multiple non-lethal attempts were made to subdue Coderre, including using a Taser. Police then opened fire and killed Coderre.
A police officer was shot in the leg in the incident and was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, where he was treated and later released.
“I would say it highlights the dangers that police officers face every day when responding to these types of situations, particularly the potential for violence. “Owning personal firearms certainly puts their lives at risk,” Quinn said at a press conference.
“These situations that the police are facing are increasing. There are too many guns on the streets, New Bedford Mayor John Mitchell said in a post on the social media platform X. “The fatal shooting in Fairhaven this evening was tragic in every way. “The injured officer will make a full recovery and I’m relieved that no one else was seriously injured. The investigation is ongoing,” Quinn said.
Coderre was fired as acting fire chief in January 2022 following he was accused of abusing the fire department’s leave policy and lying on the job.
