Our colleagues from Brut have analyzed the end-of-year speeches of French leaders since 2008. A striking similarity: each time, the current president admits that the year just ended was difficult and that the year ahead promises renewal, big decisions and change. In 2010, Nicolas Sarkozy declared: “The past year has been difficult for everyone, 2010 will be a year of renewal”. The following year, it was the same refrain: “The year 2010 is coming to an end, I know it was tough. The year 2011 promises to be a year of hope”. He is not the only one. The speeches are punctuated each year with the same observation regarding the past year, and the same promises regarding the one to come.
