Electricity prices will be negative on Sunday, the last day of 2023, according to figures from the European electricity exchange Epex Spot.
These negative rates concern the delivery of electricity for tomorrow/Sunday. For Belgium, these prices are below zero for four hours, between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. in the morning. Electricity producers then pay to provide the energy.
The reason for this situation is an imbalance between supply and demand. Electricity production is high, partly thanks to wind turbines that rotate due to strong winds, while demand is low due to mild temperatures and traditionally more limited demand at the end of the year.
These negative prices will, however, be barely perceptible for individuals, unless they have a dynamic electricity contract, linked to prices on the electricity exchanges. According to figures from the Flemish energy regulator VREG, barely 0.1% of households in Flanders had such a contract in the fourth quarter of 2023.
It regularly happens that electricity prices are negative for several hours. This was particularly the case at Christmas.
