Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Line (LGV) Project: Progress and Environmental Impact

2023-12-31 08:42:00

The project to extend the high-speed line (LGV) between Kenitra and Marrakech is progressing rapidly. The National Railway Office (ONCF) is currently carrying out the environmental and social studies necessary for the implementation of this ambitious project.

The Kenitra-Marrakech LGV project is part of Morocco’s strategy to strengthen its rail network and promote passenger mobility. It aims to connect the country’s main cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, Mohammed V airport, the new Nouaceur station and Marrakech, over a length of 431 km. This project requires the preparation of an environmental and social management plan (ESMP) which will be submitted to the National Environmental Impact Study Committee (CNEIE) to obtain an environmental and social acceptability license. The ESMP will take into account the potential impacts of the project on the physical, biological, socio-economic and cultural aspects of the territory crossed.

The Kenitra-Marrakech LGV project provides for the construction of five new stations for the next high-speed train. These stations will be located in Casablanca South, Mohammed V airport, Nouaceur station, Grand Stade Benslimane and Marrakech. They will be added to existing stations for high-speed trains, which will be adapted to new safety and comfort standards.

Furthermore, the project involves the redevelopment of several stations on the classic line, notably the passenger stations of Rabat Agdal, Casablanca, Bouskoura and Marrakech Médina. These stations will be equipped with new infrastructure and new services to bring travelers closer to high-speed trains and increased urban mobility.

An efficient control and maintenance system

The Kenitra-Marrakech LGV project also requires the establishment of an efficient control and maintenance system. Thus, the ONCF will reconfigure the existing remote control station in Rabat to adapt to the new traffic management and will create a second central control center in Casablanca or Marrakech. These centers will be responsible for supervising and regulating high-speed train traffic across the entire network.

In addition, ONCF will build a maintenance workshop at Marrakech station, which will be dedicated to the maintenance of Tijefi train vehicles. Stopping zones will also be planned between Rabat and Casablanca then between Casablanca and Marrakech to allow parking and checking of trains.

The Kenitra-Marrakech LGV project is a major project which will contribute to the economic and social development of Morocco. It will provide travelers with a fast, comfortable and secure transportation experience.
