In Baldur’s Gate 3, there is a class that lurks in the shadows of popularity of others: the cleric. A statistic from Larian Studios reveals that the cleric is the least played class in the game but is nevertheless very powerful.
The cleric: the unloved of BG3
When starting a game of Baldur’s Gate 3, you can choose from several classes, all more or less viable. The objective is of course to choose it in an “RP” way so that it suits your character, the story that you want to create with your friends or alone. Thanks to the statistics communicated by Larian Studios, we clearly see that the cleric class is the least popular. This can be explained by the simple fact that other classes like the Bard or the Wizard are more attractive to many players but also, and above all, because the first key character we meet in the scenario is Shadowheart. A Cleric herself, it is then possible to recruit her to have her in your team and many Internet users then admit to having made the choice not to play a Cleric themselves.
For anyone who is unsure of their class choice and who does not want to include Shadowheart in their team, we highly recommend the Cleric. It should not be underestimated: it is not only a support class, but also a warrior who can inflict heavy damage and ensure the survival of the group.
In the right hands, the Cleric becomes an invaluable member of any adventuring party in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Why is the cleric very strong?
The Cleric is one of the most difficult classes to play with a choice to make between 7 subclasses but above all a range of complex spells. The Domain of Light and the Domain of Life are clearly distinguished and allow you to obtain an extremely powerful character.
- Domain of Light : as a cleric, the domain of light allows you to obtain powerful AOE spells early on, particularly Channel-Divinity (focusing divine power) and later fireball, which allows you to ‘inflict massive damage. With the wall of fire, you can make tactical plays by placing it intelligently, causing enemies to take considerable damage when passing through it. In addition, the Domain of Light gives you free access to the “Protective Spirits” spell. This means that you don’t need to prepare the spell, but have it directly with you.
- Area of life : It’s so nice to see your group survive thanks to you, or to be able to turn the fight around thanks to support skills. The influence of healers and supporters on action can be immense. With the life cleric, we have the only class in Baldur’s Gate 3 that really manages to keep its allies alive. This is the only class that can be considered a “healer”. In addition, we are tanky thanks to access to heavy armor. By choosing this domain, you also later gain free access to protective spirits, which is a super powerful spell that you can really have fun with, especially in act 2.
In short, it is mainly fate “Protective spirits” which makes the cleric so cool to play. 3rd degree summoning spell, it requires concentration. You summon spirits that protect you in the form of an aura. Nearby enemies take 3 to 24 blinding damage or 3 to 24 necrotic damage per turn, depending on the damage type you choose. Additionally, their movement speed within the aura is halved. On a saving throw, enemies take all even half the damage.
You can obtain this spell with all Cleric subclasses. With the cleric of life, you can also inflict strong damage with this spell, by almost running “through the enemies” with the protective spirits.
