“We started at 5 in the morning, and Maybe at 7:30 we already cleared the first plot of land. Jaime goes with the mower, and I go gathering. We take advantage of the early morning to avoid the heat, but these days it is rough. We cut for a while at noon and then continue in the followingnoon,” Celia says with the vitality and enthusiasm of someone who is still searching for her destiny.

Become a bit the soul of the La Pasarela neighborhood, in the riverside area, west of Allen, Celia knows all the secrets of the place and has a thousand stories to tell.

“Once a neighbor started to set some weeds on fire. We all knew something was going to happen because there was wind. And just like that, within seconds, the fire grabbed the dry weeds and came to the neighborhood. We immediately started helping each other because it was coming once morest the house. Since we all have water pumps here, we connected them and started pulling as far as we might. While some threw water with buckets, others made ditches to prevent the fire from advancing. We managed to save the buttplate of a girl, who was crying inconsolably because it was the only thing she had. After the one who started the fire, she was saying that the fire was started by those of ‘the takeover’, as if denigrating us, when here we all have had legal ownership for years.”

The roots in the neighborhood also meant that some of Jaime’s children lived in the same area.
“For the Fiesta my house is full of people, we love it. The whole family comes, the kids set up the tents and stay to sleep in the patio,” says the woman while Jaime doesn’t stop doing things in silence. He finishes covering the grandchildren’s hair with a giant nylon cloth, reinforces the wooden benches that he built himself with nails, and adjusts the embers of the barbecue that one of his children started a little.

“It’s old, but we take good care of it because it takes us everywhere. We are very organized economically. We know that if one day we clear four lots, what we get from one is for the car, repairing tools or buying something we need for work. The rest to live on,” says the woman as she takes the wheel and drives to the next piece of land, also as a way to give her partner a rest.

A story of love and “reunion”

At 26 years old, Celia was left alone raising her six children.
He worked almost more time than he might spend with them. That is why his eldest daughter Carolina was his right hand and his extension within the house.

“We had no choice. I had to work all day or I didn’t have anything to feed my children.. My daughter Carolina helped me a lot, but I always instilled good values in everyone.”the woman remembers.

15 years passed of rowing alone, until life made him reunite with Jaime, whom he knew from his adolescence. Jaime’s life had not been simple either: for years he worked on the farms and also raised only six children.

The reunion was immediate. Both with grown children and with the same desire to progress in life, they put together an inseparable team.

Together they began to dedicate themselves to clearing land and little by little they built a home, meters from the Negro River, a place that preserves fruit trees and a lot of love, which they called “El Reencuentro” and which of course is the permanent family meeting place for children, grandchildren, in-laws and friends.
