In the Graubünden municipality of Medel, a wolf killed a dog in mid-December. As the cantonal office for hunting and fishing writes, the pet escaped from home.

The wolf drama took place on the night of December 15th. The dog had escaped the evening before – he was never to return to his master.

Early in the morning, the four-legged friend was discovered lifeless regarding 600 meters from the nearest inhabited houses. He was lying on a forest road, as the authorities write.

The message says: “The evidence collected by the Wildhut confirms a wolf attack in the second half of the night.”

The pet’s downfall may have been that it entered the wrong area. Because: Medel is dominated by the Stagia wolf pack, which is currently being regulated. Free-roaming dogs can be viewed by predators as intruders that need to be fought.

The authorities write: “In this case it can be assumed that the wolf is defending its territory.”

It is not the first time that a dog has died in Switzerland because of wolves. A livestock guard dog was recently killed in Valais – but not by a wolf. The perpetrator was a hunter.

The man thought he had a wolf in front of the gun and pulled the trigger. The statement from the Valais hunting inspectorate: “A wolf was located in this pasture. Unfortunately, at that time it was not known that livestock guard dogs were in this pasture.”
