Office worker Park (42) doesn’t like looking in the mirror these days. Because of the raised acne on her chin and cheeks. Isn’t acne a ‘symbol of youth’? I am saddened by her own situation as she is waging war with her acne even beyond her blemishes.

Originally, acne is a skin disease that mainly occurs in people in their teens and twenties. However, according to dermatologists, adult acne is increasing following the age of 30. Why does adult acne occur?

The first main culprit is ‘stress’. When we are stressed, hormonal and autonomic nervous system changes occur in our body. In particular, an increase in cortisol in the blood leads to an increase in sebum secretion, which causes adult acne. Additionally, adult acne is much more common in women than men, and it is presumed that there is a hormonal effect.

The second main culprit is ‘alcohol’. Alcohol is a proven ‘dangerous food’ for acne. Drinking alcohol weakens the body’s immunity, which not only worsens existing acne inflammation but also causes new acne to appear.

The third main culprit is ‘makeup’. Cosmetic acne is mainly distributed around the mouth, chin, and jaw line. Recently, I use a lot of hair products, but they often clog the pores on my forehead and cause acne.

The fourth main culprit is ‘men’s shaving’. Shaving removes excessive dead skin cells from the skin and creates tiny, invisible wounds, which can lead to bacterial infection and inflammation.

When you go to the hospital to treat acne, they prescribe medications (vitamin A derivatives of isotretinoin, antibiotics), skin scaling, or laser treatment. What is more important than such treatment is lifestyle management.

◇Lifestyle management method to improve acne
▶Find a way to relieve stress = Moderate exercise can control the intensity of stress and is beneficial to your health. It is important to adjust your schedule when exercising to prevent acne from getting worse. It is best not to wear makeup as much as possible, and as heat and sweat can create an environment for bacterial growth, it is best to wear cotton sportswear that is not tight. It is a good idea to shower quickly following exercising to reduce contact time with sweat as much as possible.

▶Drink plenty of water and do not consume too much sugar = When your skin is dry, dead skin cells accumulate and clog pores. You can prevent skin drying by drinking a lot of water and maintaining indoor humidity at a moderate level of 50-60%. It is also helpful to refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking, and to consume antioxidant foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts that are rich in vitamins. On the other hand, it is best to avoid fatty, sugary, and flour foods as they can dry the skin and worsen acne.

▶For trouble, an electric razor and shaving foam are essential = For trouble around the chin, it is better to use an electric razor. Additionally, it is essential to use a sufficient amount of shaving foam to minimize irritation between the skin and the razor blade. Before shaving, it is a good way to reduce skin irritation by sufficiently opening the pores of the area to be shaved with a hot, wet towel and then shaving. Also, when shaving, it is best to shave according to the texture of your skin. Doing this from top to bottom, from under the ears to under the nose, and from the chin to the nape of the neck reduces skin damage and scars.

▶ Check cosmetics frequently and cleanse thoroughly = In order to suppress acne bacteria, you must check whether anything you use on your face every morning, such as a puff or your hands, has any potential to cause skin problems. It’s easy for sebum to remain around the chin because it’s not cleaned well when cleansing or washing your face, so it’s best to pay special attention to it. However, if you rub too hard or cleanse for a long time, it can irritate your skin.
