According to Dani Meseguer, there was no master plan for »While Passion Lasts«: “We didn’t sit down together at the table and decide what the album should sound like. I think it doesn’t work that way. I think inspiration has to come spontaneously, it just doesn’t make sense to come up with a plan. I see this as artistic restriction. We just sat down and started writing. We then refined the material until we were happy with it.”
According to band founder and guitarist Dani Meseguer, the fifth album, which is now considered the legitimate successor to “Triumph And Agony” from 2021, was created in this way and no other, by the band from Murcia in southern Spain. And when you listen to the trio that opens this album, you can only agree with what they said.
The title track “Blood From A Stone” and “Mr. Know it All” convince with strong guitars, riffs and Alexx Panza’s voice. In addition, they are short and sweet and get to the heart of what’s important, namely rocking as hard as you can. Speaking of stuff – the band acquired some vintage equipment for “While Passion Lasts” in order to get the sound of the golden 80s as best as possible. And that clearly paid off. While “Unholy Games” takes the foot off the accelerator a bit, you can hear Panza’s screamer qualities perfectly on “Truthful Lies”.
And where other bands noticeably slack off in the song material towards the end (HITTEN weaken a bit in the middle section with “Dark Stalker” and “Hold Up To The Night” – certainly not bad songs, but are a lot behind the others), they still throw it two great songs into the mix. While “Where It All Begins” turns out to be a soulful hard rocker in the WHITESNAKE style, “Crimetime” shows everything the band can do in terms of speed. This song actually belongs to the speed metal category and at first it doesn’t fit at all with the other tracks on this album, but upon closer listening you have to admit that it does fit in and rounds off the new album perfectly with its speed, rough edges and completed.
For everyone who has their hearts set on 80s metal and hard rock, “While Passion Lasts” is an absolute must. This genre is rarely offered in this young and refreshing style and with this quality.
