The mayor of the City of Antwerp, Bart De Wever (N-VA), has decided to impose house arrest on 31 people during New Year’s Eve. The measure, presented as preventive, was applied for the first time last year.
The 31 people targeted by this house arrest are between 13 and 22 years old and are known to the police as repeat offenders, “some having been arrested dozens of times last year”, according to the mayor. The charges once morest them range from nuisances and fights to fireworks and fires, including acts of vandalism, possession of weapons and obstruction of police activity.

“The profiles selected for house arrest target serious crimes. These are people who in themselves present a high risk for the maintenance of order on New Year’s Eve, when the security and emergency services are particularly in demand” , justified Mr. De Wever. Last year, the measure targeted 27 people. This year, following an evaluation deemed positive by the municipal authorities, it concerns 29 young men and two young women.
The police will carry out checks to ensure that these summons are respected. Otherwise, a fine of 350 euros will be imposed on offenders for non-compliance with the measure.
