The Roraima Civil Police (PCRR) carried out Operation Gato-Net last Thursday (28), which resulted in the seizure of more than 2 thousand meters of fiber optic cables stolen from the operator Oi S/A. The wiring was being used improperly by several internet providers in the city of Boa Vistacapital of the state.

The action was coordinated by the 2nd Police District (DP) and included the participation of agents from the 1st and 5th DPs, in addition to the Capital Judicial Police Department (DPJC). The police went to 15 addresses identified by the investigation. In total, were collected by Oi technicians under PC supervision 2,032 meters of ropes.

The head delegate of the 2nd DP, Miriam Di Manso, informed that each team, together with experts from the ICPDA (Instituto de Criminalística Perito Dimas Almeida), the representative of the company Oi and technicians from Serede, an outsourced company that provides services for them, went to identified locations to cut the cables and remove them from where they were installed.

“We understand that these cables were stolen and passed on to companies that provide internet signals”, explained the head delegate of the 2nd DP, Miriam Di Manso. The removal of stolen fiber optic cables left some users in the region without an internet connection; PCRR’s guidance is for affected customers to file a police report.

“If the user had their internet signal interrupted this Wednesday morning, it was for this reason. The company providing this user’s signal was identified using the cables improperly and these cables were collected. We advise the consumer to register a police report and take action once morest the company, so that it can be held responsible”.

“A representative of the company Oi registered the Police Report and the Civil Police began the investigation until today, when we launched the operation to locate and seize material. The next step is to identify the representatives of these provider companies and through them be able to identify who actually stole the cables”, highlighted the delegate.

This is not the first time that the Civil Police has recovered stolen telecommunications cables. The first operation was carried out in 2022 by the 1st DP resulting in the seizure of the wires and notification of the accused. It is possible that providers related to the first case will be fined once more by state authorities.
