Closing out the old year, remembering the good things and at the same time running comfortably towards the new one that lies ahead of you – all of this can be associated with the Hypo New Year’s Eve run in Linz. If you want that. But you can also chase a personal best over six kilometers (two laps through the city center) or attract attention because you have laced up your running shoes in a well-chosen costume.
The thrust of the traditional run on the last day of the year is the collective experience, the leisurely movement through the city. “We want to offer a nice run,” says organization manager Peter Weinzierl from the TriRun Linz organizing association. “For us it’s not regarding best times.”
Disguise desired
This relaxed aspect of the New Year’s Eve run in Linz is not only reflected in the many opportunities with which young and old, young and old, can get active running. You can run six or three kilometers, walk three kilometers (starts at 3 p.m.), and runs of 1.2 kilometers, 600 or 120 meters are offered for children (starts at 2 p.m.).
The entertainment value of the run at the end of the year is also visible in the costumes. These are not only permitted in Linz, but are expressly encouraged. There is also a prestigious costumed competition in which the quality of the costume is more important than the running performance. “The crazier, the better,” says Weinzierl, setting the tone. Around 1,000 active participants are expected in Linz on New Year’s Eve.
