Exploring the Ancient Martian Environment: Evidence of Water and Floods on Mars

The ancient Martian environment was not only humid, but also experienced floods. Recently released photos by NASA’s Perseverance rover show boulders covering Jezero Crater, suggesting that powerful floods washed boulders into this dried-up river delta billions of years ago, clear evidence that Mars used to be filled with water.

About 3.5 billion years ago, large amounts of water flowed through the flat Isidis Planitia on Mars. Sometimes the water flow was fast and strong enough to break through the crater walls and transport boulders to the crater for accumulation.

NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover recently used the Mastcam-Z camera to take a mosaic photo of the “Castell Henllys” site. The image consists of three images, looking toward the southwest, with an area regarding 100 meters away. Processed to improve terrain contrast.

The photo shows a large number of round boulders scattered on the surface. NASA said that these boulders were washed into the Jezero Crater that Perseverance is exploring by strong floods billions of years ago, indicating that Mars once had a large amount of flowing water.

One of Perseverance’s main missions is to search for potential signs of past life on Mars – although there is no evidence yet. But if microorganisms evolved here, then Jezero Crater, which once had streams and a 35-kilometer-wide lake, must have been a good place for life to thrive.

Perseverance is also working hard to collect original samples from the Martian surface, waiting for sealed samples to be sent back to Earth for in-depth analysis in the future.
