Venezuelan President Maduro has deployed a large number of soldiers to his country’s eastern Caribbean coast, he announced on state television. “Venezuela has the right to self-defense, the right to calm and peace,” President Maduro said. He accused Guyana of violating an agreement to continue talks without resorting to force, insisting that “we will not accept provocations or threats from anyone or anything.”

According to the Venezuelan naval commander, 5,682 soldiers are deployed. It also deploys patrol boats and amphibious vehicles.
