People are reportedly fleeing the area following ferry services to Israel’s main port of Eilat have stopped. The port of Eilat began to become deserted following Yemen’s Houthis launched attacks on Israeli-affiliated ships passing through the Red Sea.

The Israeli media ‘Walla’ reports that the city of Eilat is facing a serious economic challenge. Eli Lansri, the head of the Eilat local government, said that people were being evacuated from their residences.

Tourism in the area has stopped. Nobody wants to come here. Lansry added that Eilat is ‘dying’.

Eilat is going through a serious crisis following the Houthis started attacking in the Red Sea. Hundreds of trades were terminated. The unemployment rate has increased significantly. Lansri said that 80 percent of businesses are facing a serious crisis.

15,000 hotel workers are facing layoffs. The media reports that this proves the incompetence of the Israeli leadership. Eilat’s population reportedly dropped from 70,000 to 30,000.

A special committee meeting was held on Wednesday to discuss the issues here. It is reported that pressure has been put on the Ministry of Finance to provide immediate compensation to Eilat.

Eilat is an area of great historical and geographical importance. The ruins of the ancient Palestinian village of Umm al-Rashrash are being wiped out by Israeli settlers and the city is being built here. The region on the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba also shares borders with Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. It is also a luxury tourism destination in Israel.

As Yemen’s Houthis intensified their attacks on ships in the Red Sea, trade at the port of Eilat has dropped by 85 percent. Car imports and potash exports are mainly handled through this port.

Located next to Jordan’s only port, Aqaba, Eilat is Israel’s only port of entry to the eastern region other than through the Suez Canal.
