The French actor and director spoke out to denounce the treatment reserved for Gérard Depardieu, accused of rape and sexual assault.
New support for Gérard Depardieu. Guest of BFMTV this Thursday, the French actor and director Patrick Chesnais defended the actor, targeted by several complaints of rape and sexual assault.
He denounces the “unbearable” treatment reserved for him since the broadcast of a France 2 investigation, in which the actor appears making many obscene and misogynistic remarks during a trip to North Korea.
“Today, we are in the era of suspicion, of accusation,” believes Patrick Chesnais. “It is the popular court of opinion and rumor that makes the law. (…) Justice must do its job and until then, we must stop throwing a guy who is a national monument because he is a little crude, outrageously bawdy or saucy.”
“He’s a colorful guy, who is outrageous, provocative, it’s part of his character, he goes all out and that makes him an ideal culprit but that has nothing to do with it,” continues the actor.
“Not so serious” remarks
Asked regarding the obscene remarks made by Gérard Depardieu once morest a little girl, broadcast in Complément d’investigation at the beginning of December, Patrick Chesnais ensures that he understands that these words can “shock and disturb” but believes that they are “not so serious.”
“This little girl was 100m away and he continues his spiel in his corner and he goes all out, it’s no more serious than that. We can disagree and be shocked but (…) we don’t put Gérard Depardieu’s head on the chopping block for that, it’s unbearable”, the actor is indignant.
“It’s a question of behaving well, at the limit, but Gérard Depardieu, he is not behaving well (…) and I find it good that he is not politically correct, that he provokes a reaction , moan and gnash their teeth at the right thought,” he added.
And Patrick Chesnais concludes: “The problem is that in a sensational television show, we put his head on the block because he doesn’t behave properly, but it’s justice and the investigate who decide the facts.”
Some voices denounce his behavior
If the actor benefits from a lot of support in French cinema, a few voices have denounced his behavior towards women, particularly on the sets, and the silence which surrounded him. “He didn’t attack the big actresses, rather the little assistants,” remembers Sophie Marceau in an interview with Paris Match. “Vulgarity and provocation have always been his stock in trade.”
“Isn’t it surprising that we have to wait fifty years to tell an actor that his behavior with assistants, dressers, his partners is not acceptable, even under the pretext of being silly?”, asks for his part the actress Isabelle Carré in a text published Wednesday by the weekly magazine Elle.
