The World Blitz and Rapid Chess Championships take place from December 19 to 30 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Title holder in both formats, world number one, Magnus Carlsen, faces a host of young guns who have the ambition to overthrow him. There are the Indians Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa (18 years old) and Dommaraju Gukesh (17 years old), the Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusattorov (19 years old) and Alireza Firouzja (20 years old), an Iranian naturalized French.
Among the 100 best classical chess players in the world, 20 were born since 2000 and 12 of them come from countries without a common border and with a profusion of talents never before observed. When Uzbekistan is named the best country for chess by the magazine Europe Chess in 2022, Iran produces three international grandmasters in 2018 – supreme status with the title of world champion. India crushes the youth categories: 20% of the boys’ world rankings are Indians aged between 16 and 19, more than any other nation. Among adults, ten (including six aged 21 or under) are ranked in the top 100, ahead of the Chinese and Russians.
