Smoked salmon recalled for risk of listeria contamination

Smoked salmon is a staple of Christmas meals, but this year it might well cause some inconvenience. The SAS Le Fumoir brand is the subject of a recall of some of its products which might be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria which causes listeriosis, a rare but severe infection, warns the government organization Rappel Conso, relayed by The Parisian.
This is a batch of Norwegian smoked salmon, vacuum packed, machine pre-sliced, in one kilo format. Sold by wholesalers, it is therefore logically sold in supermarkets in France. The brands concerned are not specified by Rappel Conso.

Sold since December 5, its expiry date is January 1, 2024. The lot concerned is 11.173.011. If purchased, do not eat this smoked salmon, but destroy it or return it to the store, where an exchange will be made.

Up to six weeks of incubation

Rappel Conso describes some possible symptoms of such poisoning: “fever, isolated or accompanied by headache, and body aches”, and invites people to consult a doctor.

The platform also indicates that “serious forms with neurological complications and maternal or fetal damage in pregnant women” can sometimes occur. The latter, as well as immunocompromised people or the elderly, are particularly at risk and must be particularly attentive to these symptoms. Finally, Rappel Conso points out that this is a “serious” illness with an incubation period of up to six weeks.

In France, there are “around 5 to 6 cases per million inhabitants per year, or around 400 cases each year”, indicates the Ministry of Agriculture on its website.
