MEven when the sky is low and foggy, the view is breathtaking. From their promontory, Julien and Nora Sananes overlook the Dropt valley, in Entre-deux-Mers. A view and life in the countryside, in the village of Saint-Marin-de-Lerm, which they wish to share by creating a social, cultural and ecological third place on their Rayot farm.
The project, led by the Tandems association, is very ambitious. But it was carefully considered and the couple lacks neither will nor conviction. Behind the walls of the old agricultural buildings, a Being School will see the light of day. “Central brick of the third place”, it will be the first in Gironde and the 20e in France to offer young people aged 16 to 25 who are social and professional dropouts training in ecological transition professions.
Julien specializes in waste recycling. Nora works in popular education. She is today responsible for the national development of the NGO E-Graine. “We are driven by the challenges of education and the transmission of skills and know-how. » After leaving the Paris region, the couple lived for a few years in Talence. One step to find the place where their project might see the light of day. Two children later, they signed in 2021 for this large farmhouse, its 5 hectares and its gîte in a mansion.
Big works
“We were looking for a much more modest place. But the income from the lodge made it possible to review the financial arrangement. It’s quite crazy to be there,” smile Nora and Julien who live in a simpler house than the gîte. Another home must accommodate a family for rent. “We want to share this place of life, with people who put down roots here. »
But the main project is not there. It is in the old stable and the old cellar nearby, where the old wooden vats have not fermented wine for decades. Major works have been launched to rehabilitate everything. Nora shows us around and plans: the future multipurpose room, the educational cooking lab, the workshop, the rest area, etc.
“The pitfall to avoid is wanting to create the third place of your dreams without territorial cooperation,” warns Nora, who is banking on “dynamics and complementarity.” Multiple exchanges with local stakeholders made it possible to refine and consolidate the project. From the Petite Populaire association to La Réole, via the Ferme du Carbouey in Castets, the Beauséjour training center, the Cadillac Local Mission, the Second Chance School in Coutras and even elected officials, the project meets strong support.
“Remobilization” course
Without waiting for the work to be completed, École Etre will welcome its first trainees in March. A dozen young people, sent in part by the local Mission, will follow a two-week “remobilization” course during which local speakers will introduce their professional worlds in connection with the environment.
On the program, a wood workshop with a carpenter, a “low tech” construction site where you can learn how to build a solar shower and dry toilets, a meeting with a beekeeper, market gardening and even a helping hand to traders at the La Réole market. The interns who will sleep on site in the lodge will be accompanied by a specialized educator. “The objective is to give them a new dynamic, so that they can relearn to have confidence in themselves, so that they can take a step aside from their daily lives. We hope that they discover a range of professions through practical teaching. »
“You need a lot of audacity and not fear a few moments of solitude”
Ultimately, the Etre Gironde School will offer pre-qualifying and qualifying training over a year in energy transition professions. “To embark on this adventure of general interest, you need a lot of audacity and not fear a few moments of solitude,” confides Nora. Fortunately, we are linked to the nine other École Etre currently in incubation in France. »
The Tandems association chaired by Nora Sananes benefits from the financial support of private foundations. Requests for public subsidies have been submitted to the Department, the Region and Europe. A crowdfunding operation will be launched at the start of the year.
