Connor Geekie made the Latvians pay for their indiscipline from the start of the first period. Posted in the slot, Geekie accepted Denton Mateychuk’s pass before beating the goalkeeper in the upper area.
A few seconds later, Canada was hot. Defender Ty Nelson hit the knee of Sandis Vilmanis on a check. The referees called a major penalty on the sequence, but they went to the video replay to confirm their decision. After a few minutes of waiting, the officials reversed their decision and canceled the penalty to the defender.
The Canadiens’ fourth trio then stood out. Brayden Yager fired a wrist shot from the top of the circles which deceived the vigilance of goalkeeper Linards Feldbergs. The 17-year-old Macklin Celebrini started the sequence in the neutral zone before passing it to his linemate. It was already his second assist of the game.

Canada looks to score a second straight victory as it faces Latvia in the final game of the day at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Quebec goalkeeper Mathis Rousseau is once once more the starter in front of the Canadian goal, he who helped his team win 5-2 once morest Finland on Tuesday as the tournament opened.

Latvia, for its part, lost 6-0 to the powerful Swedes in its first match of the tournament on Tuesday.
The Latvians are counting in particular on the prospect of the Florida Panthers Sandis Vilmanis and that of the Boston Bruins Dans Locmelis to break the ice on the offensive level this followingnoon.
Canada won its three meetings once morest Latvia at the World Juniors, with a cumulative score of 31-4. The most recent meeting, two years ago during the summer tournament in Edmonton, was however closer than expected with a final score of 5-2.
Canada will have a day off on Thursday in preparation for its Friday matchup once morest Sweden. The team will then complete the preliminary round by facing Germany on Sunday.
