The federal government should finally implement the “Women on Boards” directive – parties and public institutions must adhere to gender quotas

Vienna (OTS/SK) – SPÖ women’s leader Eva-Maria Holzleitner urgently calls for the Austrian federal government to implement the “Women on Boards” directive. The reason is the study presented today regarding the participation and interest in politics of young women. “Young women obviously miss role models in politics and are fed up with male biotopes. A measure that might change this obvious disproportion would be the ‘Women on Boards’ directive negotiated by EU Vice President Evelyn Regner,” said Holzleitner. This guideline is intended to ensure that selection procedures for supervisory board members and management boards are made fairer and more transparent. “Men’s biotopes should be a thing of the past, parties and public institutions must adhere to gender quotas,” said Holzleitner. ****

Thanks to this new directive, EU member states must either meet a target of at least 40 percent women, or the underrepresented gender, on supervisory boards by 2026. Alternatively, an average of 33 percent must be achieved for both bodies, i.e. the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board. The goal must be to accelerate gender equality. “We must not get used to standstill and indifference in equality policy,” concluded Holzleitner. (Final) rm/up
