Wolf Predation in Moustiérois: DNA Analysis Confirms Wolf Presence

Was it a wolf that devoured one of Santiago Lambert’s two sheep? Everything seems to confirm it, as our colleagues from Sudpresse report. This Monday, December 25, Santiago Lambert discovered one of his sheep partially devoured. Bites to the neck indicate an act of predation. Luckily, the Jemeppois recently installed a hunting camera to monitor his animals.

The camera, with automatic triggering, authenticated the passage of a wolf, or wolf dog, around 7:30 a.m. on the Moustiérois property. These images were transmitted to the Réseau Loup du Service Public de Wallonie. A wolf specialist reacted directly to the images and came to take DNA from the sheep carcass. “It looks very much like a wolf, but we need to carry out checks, as we also do for an event of the same type, namely a sheep killed by a carnivorous animal, which occurred on Sunday in La Bruyère.” specifies Violaine Fichefet, coordinator of the Wolf Network, to our colleagues.

We must now wait for the results of DNA analyzes to authenticate whether or not the wolf is passing through the region. His passage was confirmed in 2022 at Ciney and more recently, in February, at Mettet.
