Between the unbeatable and the new, the cinema releases and the events of the year have influenced the choice of toys this past Christmas. “Sales of licensed products continue to gain market share (24.4% in 2023 compared to 21.3% in 2020, i.e. +15%). The first three films at the French box office this year (Avatar, Super Mario and Barbie) as well as the promising debut of the film Paw Patrol, but also licenses linked to video games and sports or from manga had a strong impact on the sale of toys this year,” notes Florent Leroux, president of the French federation of Toy and Childcare industries (FJP).

Pokémon, Marvel, Harry Potter timeless

Among the new September products that were a hit, according to the Federation: Bitzee, the interactive companion, the Paw Patrol car, Disney princess dolls, Fingerlings, Beyblade and Lego. Not to mention Pokémon products, always in fashion and in top sales for years.

“The interactive companions really are the stars of this Christmas. Licensed products are working well and, even more so this year, sales of Barbie dolls and accessories around the character have soared following the excitement surrounding the film. Pokémon remains a safe and timeless value, plush toys and cards are among the best-selling items,” explains Frédérique Tutt, global toy industry expert at Circana.

Board games, a safe bet

Another timeless treat offered at Christmas for young and old: board games. “The board game market in France is the largest in Europe, the French are very fond of it,” notes Frédérique Tutt. The card game “Skyjo”, “Docteur maboul” or “Puissance 4” are among the best-selling board games.

Another category is growing more and more: action figures. “These are these characters directly inspired by what we see on the screen; Spider-Man, Batman, the Marvel universes, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc. It is above all decorative objects, more than toys, which will appeal to young adults in particular,” notes the toy industry expert. Series, films, games, reboots: there is regular news around these characters.

In La Grande Récré stores, in December, it was the “Ourson Cannelle” plush toy that topped the bestseller charts, ahead of Basketball Arcade (a basketball mini-game) and the timeless Pokémon collectible cards.
