Poor oral health does not only negatively affect the teeth and gums, but it has been proven that oral diseases also pose a great risk to the health of an important vital organ in the body, according to a recent Japanese study.

The study showed that the hippocampus, a part of the brain responsible for memory, learning, and emotion, becomes more susceptible to atrophy when gum disease occurs, especially in the elderly.

It is worth noting that there is a previous American study that reached similar results, as it revealed that poor oral health increases the risk of stroke and dementia, according to the “Sputnik” website.

In a study published in the scientific journal Science Alert, researchers recommended that elderly people brush their teeth and make sound food choices, to prevent plaque formation and combat oral bacteria, thus maintaining brain health and combating cognitive decline.
