On December 24, shortly before 8 p.m., a young woman attempted to throw herself from a bridge in the port city of Bari in southern Italy. Motorists who were driving under the structure at the time immediately called the police when they saw a figure clinging to the railing, its legs dangling in the air.
Police and firefighters arrived shortly following. The woman was in a state of great distress and then informed them of her intention to commit suicide. At first, the words spoken by the professionals did not succeed in diverting the unfortunate woman from her disastrous project. But the intervention of a brave police officer finally made it possible to prevent her from dying by falling 15 meters below: he grabbed her arm with one hand while he clung to the guardrail of the the other.
The policeman kept the woman in this embrace for around fifteen minutes, Italian media reported. The rescue ended when firefighters climbed a ladder from the road to bring the young woman, who was still in the air, to safety. She was not injured but was still taken to Bari hospital to be examined.
