DECRYPTION – While some elected officials are pleading for an increase in “behavioral taxation”, the executive is looking for other levers of action.
As the new year approaches, some people are hesitant to make the resolution to quit smoking. The price of the package, which will increase from 50 cents to 1 euro depending on the brand on January 1, will probably convince some. The pack of Marlboro – the most sold in France – will thus increase to 12.50 euros. Announced last week, these new prices for cigarettes may have surprised the most informed smokers.
Indeed, when presenting its tobacco plan, the government had rather predicted that packets would pass the 12 euro mark in 2025. Even more disconcerting, Élisabeth Borne, in September, had affirmed that the government did not wish to increase taxation on tobacco in 2024.We increased tobacco taxes this year and we do not plan to increase it next year“, affirmed the Prime Minister. In reality, this announcement concerned a possible “additional” increase in tobacco taxation.
