The explosion of the hydrocarbon depot that occurred last week in Kaloum caused environmental pollution in a large part of the city of Conakry. According to the authorities, air quality readings reveal the persistence of suspended particles causing respiratory problems, headaches, hearing and vision problems.
Asked regarding the question this Tuesday, November 26, 2023, Dr Alpha Saliou Barry, pulmonologist, tried to determine the consequences of this pollution on the citizens of Conakry and surrounding areas.
According to the specialist, the explosion of the fuel depot polluted the air to an “immeasurable” degree with a mixture of several chemicals that can harm the human body.
“Air pollution is a complex and constantly changing mixture of pollutants which can be ozone, nitrogen dioxide and oxides, sulfur dioxide, metals (arsenic, lead). Certain volatile organic compounds such as butane, ethanol or benzene, or even hydrocarbons (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons – PAHs) present in coal, oil, or coming from the combustion of fuels or wood,” he said. he explained at first.
Regarding the effects of these pollutants on human health, the pulmonologist states that there can be very high concentrations of ammonia which can cause irritation, eye and respiratory burns.
“The toxicity of these particles comes from both their composition and their size. The finer the particles, the deeper they are able to penetrate the body,” he adds.
To avoid being exposed to these particles, Dr Alpha Saliou Barry advises citizens of Conakry to limit travel to the city center of Kaloum which is one of the areas particularly affected by this pollution.
“Store your medications carefully, especially asthmatics and those with respiratory problems. You can also help reduce outdoor air pollution by reducing the use of fuels and maintaining good indoor air quality, including tobacco smoke and others,” suggests the specialist.
