They say they are “sad” at the idea that the company that employs their parents is closing its doors. Two children, Yasmine and Amine, wrote a letter to President Emmanuel Macron to question him regarding the fate of Casino supermarket employees, while the group entered into negotiations to sell a good part of its stores, reports France Blue Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes this Monday.

“We need your help to save the company where our parents work. It’s a special place for us and especially for our parents (we always have Christmas parties and we like to come visit the offices),” write Yasmine and Amine. The two eight-year-old children, from Saint-Étienne (Loire), where the group’s head office is located, and Amiens (Somme), each have a parent employed in the Casino group.

And the boy and the girl are worried regarding the fate of the super and hypermarkets. “It makes us really sad. Our parents work so hard to give us a good life, and if the Casino company closes, what will happen to them? », they ask themselves.

An important brand for families

Amine and Yasmine therefore appeal to the head of state. “Please talk to the important people, explain to them how important Casino is to us,” they continue. For Abida, Amine’s mother, Casino is an important place for the two children, particularly because of the gifts and activities offered to the families of its employees, particularly at Christmas.

“Last year, there were children who were able to spend a day with the AS Saint-Étienne team, a whole day with the official bus which came to pick them up from the headquarters. My sons were part of it,” she told France Bleu. “For them, Casino, these are all these advantages which will perhaps disappear, at least in the eyes of my son. For him, it appeals to him. He says that he will no longer see Mom’s office, his colleagues, that there will be no more Christmas at Casino. »

According to France Bleu, the letter written by Yasmine and Amine was delivered last week to the president through Renaissance MP Quentin Bataillon. “I know that he was able to consult it and that the approach touched him,” he declared.

Worried employees

The future of Casino remains uncertain, while the group is in negotiations with its competitors Intermarché and Auchan to sell them almost all of its stores. Representatives of the group’s 50,000 employees in France (out of 200,000 worldwide at the end of 2022) fear a major social breakdown since Casino said it was ready to sell almost all of its large format stores – hypermarkets and supermarkets – due to the deterioration of its financial health.

The management of the group, which also includes the Monoprix and Franprix brands, indicated that nearly 12,300 jobs are affected by a change of brand as part of the proposed sale of 313 super and hypermarkets.

Employees, for their part, fear 6,000 job cuts. Especially since Casino had already committed in May to selling 119 other stores to the Les Mousquetaires/Intermarché group. The group might thus lose stores representing a small third of sales in France in 2022.

Last week, the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire asked the buyers of the Casino stores to “preserve the jobs” of the employees concerned. “They made commitments and I will ensure that these commitments are kept,” he said.
