Melbourne: Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja took to social media to mock the ICC’s double standards following being banned from displaying a peace message and sign in solidarity with Gaza during the Test match once morest Pakistan.
He had sought permission to display the image of a dove and an olive branch on his bat and shoes during the Boxing Day Test once morest Pakistan starting on Tuesday. But the ICC refused.
Khawaja was banned from wearing shoes with the slogans “All life is equal” and “Freedom is a human right” during the first Test match once morest Pakistan last week. Then the actor entered the field wearing a black armband.
Following the ICC reprimand, it said it had no connection to Gazza and had worn the band due to ‘personal bereavement’. It was then that instead of written messages, permission was sought to display a picture of a black dove with an olive branch, symbol of peace, in the next Test match.
But following being rejected, he shared the video on social media with a strong taunt once morest the ICC.
The video was shared with the caption, “Merry Christmas everyone. Boxing day sometimes makes you laugh.”
The video was posted with the hashtag duplicity and inconsistency, pointing out the eagle and Bible verse on teammate Marnes Labuschagne’s bat and the ‘OM’ symbol on South Africa all-rounder Keshav Maharaj’s bat.
Meanwhile, Aussie captain Pat Cummins came out in support of Usman Khawaja.
We fully support Uzzi (Usman Khawaja). He stands up for his beliefs and convictions. I think he’s doing it very decently. I am not aware of other aspects of his work. But that’s a perfectly normal thing, a sign of a pigeon’ – said Pat Cummins.
Asked if there was any difference between another Australian star, Marnus Labuschagne, using the eagle symbol associated with his Battle Bible verse and Usman Khawaja’s use of the dove symbol, which is a message of peace, Cummins replied that he saw no difference.
