While many are busy cooking, others have put solidarity on their agenda at the start of New Year’s Eve. This December 24, Olga, Bernard and the others are there at the Arlon night shelter at around 2:30 p.m. They are unloading meals for the homeless from the cars. An operation of the Arlon Pastoral Unit.
Damien Lepinois, volunteer at the shelter, opens the doors for them, he is delighted that his call was received five out of five. A caterer from the center will bring the lasagna. She definitely doesn’t want her name to be mentioned. In the next minute, several logs from a generous pastry chef fill the fridge. We are busy putting a paper tablecloth on the tables.
A night shelter which is almost full every evening. That is 16 beds for men and also 6 beds for women. “We have to do draws almost every other day.” explains the one who will spend New Year’s Eve at the old barracks.
The initiative comes from the group of the pastoral unit of Arlon, Laudato Si, in collaboration with traders. “We came to visit the night shelter and bonds were created,” expresses this Christian woman.
Olga, who is in charge, rejoices: “We are offering a hot meal. For us Christians, this evening is a family celebration around a good meal. But these people do not have this possibility, we want to give them a little heat. We are around ten volunteers, we are not only at the night shelter, we also distribute meals to the Tremplin and to the Relais, the secular action center.” It highlights the great collaboration on each side. So it’s Christmas for a hundred people.
