It is a moment always eagerly awaited by young and old, with its share of joy, and sometimes also disappointment. Millions of French people unwrapped their Christmas presents on Sunday evening, or are preparing to do so this Monday noon, under the tree. But don’t panic, if you don’t like your gift, or if you already have it in your cupboard, you might be able to resell it. This year, one in four French people are ready to do so according to eBay, particularly on peer-to-peer sales sites. For weeks, platforms have been preparing to deal with the influx of new announcements.
300,000 new ads from this Monday
And who says gift resales means a lot of deliveries between individuals. Thus, eBay expects to welcome 300,000 new listings on its site from this Monday, almost three million until the beginning of January.
So, before Christmas, the platform negotiated with its partners, the transport companies, to offer the lowest delivery rates to its users. “We have a team dedicated to shipping,” says Louise Benzrihem, project manager at eBay. “Their big job ahead of the holidays is to accurately assess the volumes of shipments that we expect on our platform in order to negotiate the most attractive prices,” she explains to Europe 1.
Highly mobilized customer services
We also have to manage user requests since between Christmas and New Year’s Day, transactions happen very quickly. In total, 20% of the gifts re-offered on Beebs, a second-hand children’s specialist, are sold within the week following the offer. A rhythm that requires very mobilized customer service, explains Morgan Hilmi, the co-founder of the platform.
“Our customer service teams consist of six people and that’s regarding half of the team that remains present between Christmas and New Year’s Day,” he says. “There are a lot of sales being made, a lot of buyers, and therefore a desire on our part to continue to support them, by being very responsive and responding in less than 24 hours.” Last year, from December 25, the number of ads posted on the platform was six times higher than normal.
