BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) — China will continue to work with all parties to strengthen coordination and support more responsible and meaningful actions in the United Nations Security Council for an early cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the implementation of the two-state solution, as well as peace and stability in the Middle East, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday.

The spokesperson made this statement when invited to comment on Resolution 2720, adopted last Friday by the United Nations Security Council with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions, and calling for urgent action to extend the humanitarian aid to Gaza and create the conditions for a lasting cessation of hostilities.

According to Mao, China voted in favor of Resolution 2720, the second resolution adopted by the Security Council since the start of the current Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The resolution does not fully meet international expectations and has some gaps to fill, she said.

The current Palestinian-Israeli conflict has killed and injured tens of thousands of civilians, and the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, Mao said, adding that China demanded that the resolution be implemented effectively, humanitarian aid be expanded and a monitoring mechanism put in place as soon as possible.

Achieving a ceasefire remains the top priority and the prerequisite for everything else, the spokesperson noted. China will continue to work with all parties to strengthen coordination and support more responsible and meaningful actions in the United Nations Security Council to make unremitting efforts towards an early cessation of hostilities in Gaza, of the implementation of the two-State solution, as well as peace and stability in the Middle East, she concluded.
