ANTIOCH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in a California town were searching for the suspect in a collision that left two young brothers dead Friday.

Police responded to a traffic collision at an intersection in Antioch around 11:30 p.m., local police said in a statement.

Authorities arrived at the scene of the accident between two vehicles, one of which was carrying two children, ages 12 and 13.

The children were taken by ambulance to area hospitals but died from their injuries, police said.

The driver of one of the vehicles fled on foot, according to police.

“It appears that speed and reckless driving were factors in this incident,” police said.

A witness reported seeing a black SUV speed past him. He heard a crash and went to the scene, where he found the driver of the car who appeared to have been hit by the pickup truck, according to KGO-TV.

The witness said he helped the man, believed to be the children’s father, get one of them out of the vehicle.

Antioch police asked citizens to provide any information they had.
